Popular Features. Spend more time volunteering and less time managing your books. We use EXCEL for some pretty complicated stuff at work and it's brilliant, includes things very similar to what you list - only it was someone else who put it all together. I guess I'm just thinking out loud always dodgy Excel is as easy or as complicated as you like to make it. I took over as treasurer a short while ago and was handed a very simple spreadsheet.

I am an accountant and am very familiar with spreadsheets and I realised that, as much as I want to improve the one I was handed, the next treasurer will probably be less knowledgeable and may well get themselves into a muddle and mess it up. I was trying to see if anyone had come across anything better. After all, I see that there are a few attempts at making databases for keeping records of members, badges, camps and a whole range of things.

These could, presumably, just as easily be on a spreadsheet - like the accounts. I could do like my predecessor and monitor income and expenditure over the year but I know that accounting software can do so much more. I see that Excel is the preferred choice, which is fine. I shall continue with it until something better comes along. To me this is the problem, especially when in 20 years, or 2 years you move on to be very blunt!!

I know of groups who can't find somebody willing to do whatever magic is required at the end of the year to prepare the accounts reconciling balances, tallying payments etc etc. We never charge the same amount for an event as we do for subs.

We're getting there Firstly, what a lucky group! Thanks for volunteering secondly, with many of my spreadsheets, i will have a separate sheet for raw data, and use other sheets to actually do the work.

This way, you could pass on the complete thing, and another which was just raw data. You can say either is good, and it will be up to them to work out which is best for them! I wouldn't use sage and I am an accountant. Really easy to put payments in, payments out, set up categories for things, you can seperate out cash and bank accounts, and reconcile against statements.

We use it for the Explorer Unit accounts, and for Theme Park Camp, both of which can have s of entries per year. Comes into its own at end of year with its reports and stuff.
