Cancel Continue. The viral disease has spread into at least countries. Though the coronavirus is still being analyzed, here are five charts summarizing some of what we know about COVID and how it compares to other diseases. New coronavirus cases have spread steadily since being discovered in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December and then more rapidly in the rest of the world.

Charts like this reflect only cases reported to the World Health Organization. The number of people with coronavirus is higher than these figures show. This chart could look very different in a month or two. How many people a disease infects is only part of what makes it serious.

Ebola, in contrast, had less than 30, reported cases total over a multiyear outbreak, but it was treated as a crisis because of how deadly the disease can be if people do get sick. That requires more study. Though people of all ages have caught coronavirus, the disease has been deadliest among older patients with weaker immune systems. Most are thought to be involved in gene regulation.

The team found that a viral protein called EBNA2 was associated with nearly half of the genetic regions associated with the risk for lupus. EBNA2 is known to work through human transcription factors, which bind to DNA and affect the expression of genes nearby. The team also used RELI to compare the genetic regions tied to risk of other autoimmune diseases.

They found that EBNA2 bound to regions associated with the risk for multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and celiac disease.

Many transcription factors were associated with these regions as well. Anthony S. References: Transcription factors operate across disease loci, with EBNA2 implicated in autoimmunity. Nat Genet. PMID:
